Scheer earns gold in SuperJack
By Audrey Aloi
Field & Stream Magazine — July 10, 2005

CELEBRATION, Fla. — After eight grueling events and hundreds of accumulated points in the SuperJack competition, gold and silver medalists were separated by the slimmest of margins — a mere 3 points. At the end of the boom run, it was Cassidy Scheer holding gold after upsetting nine-time IronJack champion Rob Waibel.

It was the final discipline, the daunting boom run, which decided the SuperJack outcome. Cassidy Scheer conquered it with dazzling dexterity, flying across the logs and back, on his way to the fastest time. Getting wet was not an option for Scheer who needed to keep his feet on the wood in order to take the lead and the gold from Rob Waibel.

In the seven events leading up to the final round, Waibel rocked his fellow lumberjacks by taking first in every event except speed climbing. The boom run between Scheer and Waibel turned out to be a face-off for first with Waibel leading Scheer 639.15 to 600.53 points. With only 39 points separating them, Scheer knew that Waibel needed a dunking while he needed to stick to the log for the win.

"Before heading into the boom, I knew I needed a clean run and Rob had to fall in," Scheer said. "I was steady the whole way. I knew it was going to be razor thin."

Aside from winning the boom run, he placed second in the Axe Throw (92.86 pts), and Speed Climbing (98.68 pts) events. His speed climbing time of 0:14.42 put him second behind first-place finisher Wade Stewart.

Scheer has been doing all eight disciplines of the SuperJack for 10 years but this was the first time he ever competed in an event of this format.

"I practice two times a day, six days a week all summer long," Scheer said.

Scheer deserves the title of champion after his first-place finish. He will be the one everyone wants to beat. But for now, he's enjoying the win.

"I'm just so happy right now," Scheer said.
