By Audrey Aloi
Field & Stream Magazine — July 9, 2005

CELEBRATION, Fla — At the end of Round 1 in the SuperJack competition, Rob Waibel is in the lead with 379.29 points. Wade Stewart is in second place with 331.70 points. Cassidy Scheer is not far behind in third place with a total of 330.27 points.

In the first event of the evening, Waibel had a strong first-place finish in Springboard, with a time of 55.82, earning 100 points, the most possible for any of the SuperJack events. The bar was set high with that time to beat and nobody even came close. The next best time went to Jeff Skirvin who finished with 1.00.02. Third place went to "Wild Thing" Dustin Beckwith with a time of 1:16.46.

Tony Bush earned 100 points by placing first in the Single Buck Saw portion, the second event of the night, with a time of 0:13.29. It was just quick enough to beat Jeff Skirvin who finished in second place with a time of 0:13.58. Dustin Beckwith finished in third with 1:16.46.

The Obstacle Pole Race had fans on the edge of their seats. Penalties were called, points were lost and time was deducted from many of the competitors. The course involves strength, agility, and balance. If the lumberjack breaks concentration it could ruin his chances. Pay attention to the competitor running the boom next to you and you could end up soaking wet. Jeff Skirvin takes a humorous perspective on the race.

"Typically, lumberjacks aren't that smart," Skirvin said. "You really have to concentrate on what you're doing out there. You can't look over at what the other guy is doing."

Will Lavalley had an impressive run on the Obstacle Pole Race, finishing with a time of 0:40.20. Wade Stewart had a strong second place finish of 0:42.75. Cassidy Scheer placed third with a time of 0:43.16.

Wade Stewart lived up to everyone's expectations when it came to the Speed Birling portion. Stewart, who finished last in Springboard and sixth in Single Buck, spun the log faster than a washing machine on spin cycle. Stewart turned the log the requisite 25 times in only 0:21.82 seconds. Before taking to the log, Scheer was in first place with a respectable time of 0:23.10. He anxiously watched as Stewart rolled his way to a first place finish forcing Scheer into second place. Rob Waibel finished in third with a time of 0:23.66.

The Games will be aired on ESPN and ABC Sports July 13-17, 2005. Click here for the broadcast schedule.
