For the week of Dec. 18-24
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
My player of the week is Stanford guard Casey Jacobsen. The super-soph helped the Cardinal beat Georgia Tech, but then he made his biggest noise against the Dukies.
He doesn't get enough publicity but he was brilliant against the Blue Devils. He kept his team alive in the first half and finished with 26 points for the game. And it was fitting that he made the biggest shot of the contest -- a ten-footer off the glass with 11 seconds left to send the Stanford crowd into a frenzy and secure the victory.
DIAPER DANDY OF THE WEEK
Michigan State's Zach Randolph provided instant offense off the bench for the Spartans in their win over Seton Hall in the Jimmy V Classic. It was clear the Pirates could not handle the power and strength of Randolph inside.
He dominated on the interior and scored 13 productive points. He was a major force and a total mismatch as Seton Hall had no answer.
TEAM OF THE WEEK
The Virginia Cavaliers really proved something beating a strong Tennessee team at the Jimmy V Classic.
Coach Pete Gillen has a balanced squad. Donald Hand really impressed me with his leadership skills and good shot selection. Roger Mason Jr. also had an impressive game. The Cavaliers are my team of the week.
COACH OF THE WEEK
The Longhorns shocked Illinois down in Austin Saturday night. Rick Barnes had his squad ready to play a tough game heading into conference play.
Texas will now be a factor in the Big XII with the arrival of Darren Kelly, who averaged 22 points in his first two games since returning. Kelly is a big-time scorer from the perimeter and Barnes welcomes him back with open arms.
SHOCK OF THE WEEK
Southern Utah beats Utah 77-70 to continue a disappointing season.
First Weber St. ended the 54-game home win streak of the Utes. Now, in-state opponent Southern Utah scored a major shock as Dan Buse scored 20 points and Freddy House made a couple big buckets late. They led Southern Utah to shock-city over the Utes.
