Vitale's Best of the Week

USC remains unbeaten and one key for the Trojans has been the play of unsung David Bluthenthal. He's capable of scoring on the interior, he can step outside and shoot the trifecta and he's a glass-eater. Bluthenthal is a spark, a major factor and my Player of the Week.

He had 25 points and 12 boards in a Maalox Masher win over UC-Santa Barbara. Bluthenthal hit the game-winning hoop off a rebound, coming up big-time again. Earlier in the week he had 29 points and 11 rebounds in a win over a solid Cal State-Northridge squad.

Bluthenthal totaled seven trifectas in the two-game span. Henry Bibby is happy to have him in the Trojan lineup, baby!

Wake Forest gets the nod thanks to its brilliant performance in blowing out then-fourth-ranked Kansas.

Davey Odom's club was outstanding. Kansas was without Kenny Gregory, but you can't take anything away from the Demon Deacons, who did everything well on offense, defense and on the glass.

Roy Williams said that Wake Forest beat his team in every phase of the game. Wake Forest now has the second-longest win streak in America behind only Michigan State. Remember, the Demon Deacons won the NIT last year; this season, they won't be talking NIT in Winston-Salem -- it's NCAA, baby!

It was the Zach Attack in East Lansing. Zach Randolph showed his dominant inside ability vs. nationally ranked Florida, scoring 27 big points on 10-of-13 shooting. The combination of Randolph and Marcus Taylor is as good as any 1-2 diaper dandy inside-outside attack in America.

Randolph showed his agility and mobility against the Gators. He followed up with a solid performance, scoring 16 points (8-of-11 shooting) and nine rebounds in 22 minutes in a win over Loyola-Chicago.

Weber State went into Salt Lake City with a 3-3 record. It came away with a 79-77 shocker over Utah, snapping the Utes' 54-game home win streak.

Prior to Saturday, Utah had not lost a home game since December of 1996. Jermaine Boyette stepped up big time with 27 points to lead Weber State.

At Georgia, it has not been an easy time for coaches. The school recently fired football coach Jim Donnan in a major surprise. As I've said, that was an unfair decision.

One coach who has been doing well is Jim Harrick, who has a championship ring on his finger from UCLA in 1995. Georgia got out of the gate slowly this season, with losses to Georgia State and Minnesota. Harrick has rallied the Bulldogs, including an upset of Utah.

Harrick has done a solid job with limited personnel. Last week, Georgia beat rival Georgia Tech, an impressive win considering the Yellow Jackets earned Ws over UCLA and Kentucky. The Bulldogs also edged N.C. State, a team which has been a disappointment this season.

Georgia hasn't disappointed lately, so Harrick is my Coach of the Week.
