Vitale's Best of the Week

For the week of Nov. 13-19:

Jason Rozycki, Oakland: It was Shock City last week when Oakland University of the Mid-Continent Conference, in its third season in Division I basketball, put the hurt on Brian Ellerbe's Michigan Wolverines. One of the key players responsible for the upset was Rozycki, who scored 32 big points. He hit six trifectas, grabbed five rebounds and dished eight assists. Yes, reality set in as he struggled in the loss to Michigan State, but you can't take away what he did against Michigan. Rozycki gets my nod as PTPer of the week.

Rodney White, Charlotte: Charlotte, the school people used to call North Carolina-Charlotte, is a real sleeper team. Bobby Lutz has a dangerous club and the 49ers sent word that they are legitimate with a big win at Raleigh over N.C. State. Many projected the Wolfpack to be a Top 25 team, and the 49ers put the hurt on them, 95-78. One big factor was White, an inside-outside player who put up 21 points against the veteran frontline of N.C. State. He knocked down three trifectas and played a big role.

Georgia State and Tennessee Tech: Let's start with the TAAC and Georgia State. Lefty Driesell's team came up with a big win at Georgia. The magical enthusiasm is so contagious around the lefthander. Then there is Tennessee Tech, coached by former North Carolina guard Jeff Lebo. That's right, Lebo, who was recruited to play for the Tar Heels by current Gamecocks coach Eddie Fogler. The Golden Eagles of the Ohio Valley Conference stunned South Carolina of the SEC. What a way to start the season with big-time upsets.
