CELEBRATION, Fla. Rivalry is a healthy part of any competition. Here at the Great Outdoor Games, J.R. Salzman, 26, has a sibling rivalry with big sister Tina Bosworth, 31.
As children growing up in Hayward, Wis., a town known for producing many world champion log rollers, the two would roll against each other. Salzman started rolling at the age of 5 against his sister, who already was ripe with experience at the age of 10.
"She was bigger, so she would beat me," he said. "We didn't really have the competitive drive kick in until we were older." The two have trained with each other and pushed each other to find that competitive edge.
The results have been astounding. Salzman has 12 Great Outdoor Game medals under his belt, tying him with Jason Wynyard for the most medals won at the games. Bosworth has won five medals at the Games. That's a grand total of 17 medals between the two of them. Bosworth also has won 10 world titles.
"My goal is to win 11 world titles," Salzman said. "I have five right now."
Both siblings were a part of the inaugural games held in Lake Placid, N.Y., in 2000.
"Lake Placid had a really cool small town feel to it. You could hang out after competition on Mirror Lake and hang out with the people you just log rolled in front of," Salzman said.
Since those first games in 2000, Salzman has seen a lot of change. "The amount of exposure we get here in Orlando is awesome," he said. "We had a few hundred watching in Lake Placid and now we have people lining up to get in to watch us compete."
This year, Salzman will be competing in the Boom Run, Log Roll and World Team Relay.
Salzman hopes to accomplish a lot at this year's games. He may even cheer his sister on.
The Games will be aired on ESPN and ABC Sports July 13-17, 2005. Click here for the broadcast schedule.
