J.R. Salzman of Rochester, Minn., collected his second gold medal of the day Saturday when he and his teammate, Shana Martin of Madison, Wis., blew through the competition at the Mixed Doubles Boom Run contest at the Great Outdoor Games presented by Dodge.

Although Salzman was happy to add the Mixed Doubles medal to the Men's Boom Run gold he earned earlier in the day, his eyes were already on Sunday's main event, the Men's Log Rolling competition.

"Boom running is for fun. Log rolling's what I train for," Salzman said. "It's what I live for."

Trained or not, Salzman showed enough mastery of the sport to overtake Fred "The Silver Fox" Scheer of Hayward, Wis., despite the three-log lead that Scheer's niece Lizzy Hoeschler of LaCrosse, Wis., posted for the eventual silver-medal team.

Eight male-female teams ran in bracketed format on the eight-log-long boom, a 106-foot floating "bridge" of logs loosely connected end-to-end between a pair of docks.

One of the most successful teams was Women's Log Rolling silver medalist Abby Hoeschler of LaCrosse, Wis., and Tyler Fischer of Hudson, Wis.

The two teen-age competitors were the youngest of the competition and the lightest, an advantage when running over the precarious logs.

Although they fell to Salzman and Martin in the semifinal round, they whipped out a photo finish against Maggie Bulk of LaCrosse, Wis., and Men's Log Rolling silver medalist Carl Rick, earning the victory by just two-tenths of a second.
