Juice tastes gold again

CELEBRATION, Fla. — On an agility course designed for speed, every step counts. Marcus Topps and his border collie, Juice, won the Agility Superweave competition with one sharp turn.

This head-to-head canine event features side-by-side courses where two dogs race slalom-like through a series of 36 poles, soar over jumps and zip through a narrow tunnel while trying to beat their opponent and the clock.

Juice
It's all a matter of businesss for Juice: two days, two events, two gold medals.
The pair's gold medal comes on the heels of yesterday's victory in the Agility Large event, and firmly establishes the duo as the ones to beat. But competition isn't a threat to 28-year-old Topps who said, "Without it, you don't get better." After placing 11th last year, these two came prepared.

The semifinals pitted Juice against Gator, another border collie of the same age and same height. Juice gained his lead with speed in the tunnel and upon finishing assumed his favorite position by hopping into Topps' arms.

In the finals, the team went up against Stuart Mah and Qwik and defeated them by five hundredths of a second with a final time of 19.41 seconds. The dogs were neck and neck until the very last jump. Juice's turn towards the weave poles was at a slightly sharper angle, allowing him to gain one stride on his competitor and seal his gold-medal win.

At four years old, Topps feels Juice has yet to hit her prime. Until she does, the two will keep circling White Rock Lake in Dallas — Topps on a bike, and Juice running by his side.

Mah and Qwik's final time of 19.90 seconds gave them the silver medal and Jody Lolich-Dietz and Gator took the bronze with a time of 20.84.
