MADISON, Wis. — Hamlet, a pint-sized Jack Russell Terrier and Juice, a Border Collie, competed in separate Sporting Dog events at the ESPN Great Outdoor Games. Yet both dogs shared the commonality of scoring gold medals after posting perfect scores in the rain-soaked finale of the Small and Large Agility competition held at Eukanuba Field.

Hamlet, handled by Renee King of Richmond, Texas, posted a cumulative total time of 79.194 seconds for first and second rounds, while Juice, handled by Marcus Topps of Garland, Texas, breezed through the course in 1:12.836.

In the Small Agility division, Shimmer, a Jack Russell Terrier handled by Barb Davis of Newman Lake, Wash., earned the silver medal by posting a time of 82.919 seconds. The bronze was taken by Christine Frank and Kimie, a Miniature Schnauzer and the defending gold medalist with a time of 86.998.

Other medal winners in the Large Agility division included Qwik, a Border Collie handled by Stuart Mah of Bryceville, Fla., with a combined time of 1:18.326. The bronze was earned by Julie Daniels of North Sandwich, N.H., and her Border Collie, Spring, with a time of 1:25.243.

Winning the gold was especially sweet for Topps, a former soccer player who became hooked on agility just two years ago.

"I just love this kind of pressure and it even though it rained we did our best," said Topps, 28, a physical therapy student at the University of Texas. "This is just a fun event. The chance to combine athleticism with the camaraderie of others who participate is what attracted me to the sport."

Equally as awestruck was King, who ended a medal dry run after trying for the past two ESPN Great Outdoor Games to make the cut.

"It's a great feeling to finally do this," said King, 29, and a high school teacher. "I travel all over the world with these people and their dogs and we're family. It's just great to share it will them, too."
