Disc Drive to Lock-Eye Razzle

Fourth-place finisher Razzle Dazzle, handled by John Misita, goes up for the grab. (See results below.)
MADISON, Wis. — A typical afternoon for Tim Geib and canine Lock-Eye Razzle is spent tossing the Frisbee in the backyard of his Atlanta home.

This afternoon was different.

The pair played the popular leisure pastime but when the game was over, it was a gold medal that was hanging around the neck of the Border Collie.

In the medal round, Geib zipped the disc 195 feet down the field and his canine teammate leaped into the air to make the clutch catch. And with that, the first gold medal was theirs in inaugural the Disc Drive competition of the ESPN Great Outdoor Games.

Hurricane, an Australian Shepherd handled by Darron Barrus of Pelham, Ala., scored the silver with a medal round distance of 181.75 feet. Ciela, a mixed breed Border Collie, teamed up with handler Greg Tresan of Ball Ground, Ga., to take the bronze medal with a distance of 168.917 feet.

Tim Geib & Razzle
Lock-Eye Razzle was the first-place finisher with Tim Geib as the handler.
In this competition, the object is to make the medal round and save the best for last. And that is how Geib and his peers made the cut.

"What is most important in an elimination like this is maintaining a pace," noted Geib. "You must keep the pace and not burn out before it counts."

"The key is making throws
that the dog can catch," he added. "It does you no good to try and haul a big throw the dog can't catch."

Geib, 49, might play casual backyard Frisbee with his dog but he's anything but an amateur of the pastime.

As a college student he played ultimate Frisbee before retiring from the sport.

Razzle
Hurricane, who is trained by Darron Barrus, sinks his teeth into the Games — and the silver medal.
After a few idle years, his interest in playing with the disc was revived when he began throwing the disc with his pet Airedale.

In this event, each team was given the chance to make two throws in rotation with the best of the throws scored for the respective semifinal and medal rounds.

The dog must catch the disc while it's still airborne and without tips or bobbles.

The scoring distance is measured from the start line to the capture point with the dog required to return to the handler to complete the run.
